It's a common joke repeated from some obscure copypasta. I feel like it's based on Dwight's elaborate heist story in The Office, but I can't remember it clearly enough to say for sure.

It might have been inspired by the Barometer question, which frequently gets attributed to Niels Bohr in a similar fashion.
