Three decades of working in the American corporate machine has transformed me into a person who despises my job, industry, and working in general, yet I feel sinful if I sleep in until five on Saturday mornings and spend useless time doing laundry and buying groceries that reduces my profit making hours for the company beast.
I'm a shell of a human being with fifteen years to go, and the only thing that keeps me going is knowing I can steal a day or two away every six months or so.
Even then, it's taken years for the profit machine to learn that those sparse days are not to be spent by me answering work calls.
I know Europe isn't perfect, but they sure seem to place a hell of a lot more emphasis on living before they die.
You shouldn't feel like that at all, put the phone down and fuck off when you're on PTO. Don't answer calls on the weekends unless they're house on fire style. Clock out at 5 and forget work. Corps are not loyal to you, so you don't owe them any loyalty.
Would it make sense to find a new job? I hate American corporate culture just as much, and it frustrates me that we have such an unhealthy attitude towards leisure and enjoyment of life in this country, but as long as I have options, I’m not interested in working for a company where the expectation is regular weekend work (even if it means reducing my lifetime earning potential).
