As a Jew, I say this kindly as I possibly can but it very much is quite strong in the real world. I've experienced antisemitism numerous times over with people using antizionism as an excuse. Antisemitism is really bad and has risen in the past few years online and offline, and people with bad intentions absolutely exploit Israeli war crimes to justify their antisemitism. And it creates a shitty feedback loop as hardcore Zionists point to instances of antisemitism that's in done under the guise of antizionism as "hey look see they hate us thats why we need zionism!"

Mmm, there's nuance there. It can be exploited to push antisemitism, but it isn't inherently antisemitic.

Antisemitism explicitly refers to hatred of Jews, it's a weird linguistics thing but its why when referring to antisemitism there isnt a dash (anti-semitism) as that would specifically refer to all semites as a whole (which palestinians are). It has roots to the specific phrase that was used in German to refer to hatred of Jews.

It's undoubtedly going to be extremely frustrating for many to hear just how many times this book has banned and challenged, but know that its actually caused a Streisand affect. The author has now made this book a bestseller and it has not only exploded in popularity, they have made a ridiculously huge amount of money.

Been listening to Spinning Silver and reading a bit more of the Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. Slowly but surely leaving my reading slump!

Honestly? That's more than valid. The book isn't perfect and the critique against it are very real. I enjoy the lore behind it but the show is even worse on that end in that it explicitly ignores the white supremacist aspect that the book only briefly touches on. It's not a perfect story by any means, and the fact to many people it has to be used to evoke a sense of empathy against non-white women's suffering is quite telling.

This book was fantastic

Spoiler alert: Nope. It wasn't.

Right now there is a bit left to be desired when it comes to lemmys accessibility features, but it's a good idea to be mindful of the fact the fediverse and its platforms tends to have pretty universal accessibility features that will likely come to lemmy sooner rather than later

I know Canadian libraries operate similarly, but I mean more so like in Europe. Are they as big there as they are here? And do they require fees to join, or are paid via taxes like here as well?

Like, increased empathy or altered your perspective a bit.

On a lighthearted note, 1984 taught me that most people who quote it in political discussions have probably never actually read it.

I've heard people say so before about a few different books across different social media platforms I've used, but I wanted to know some peoples opinions here
