And it was able to take such good photographs because of a fairly rare planetary alignment that allowed for three gravitational slingshots.

The last time this happened, Thomas Jefferson was president, and he blew it.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 17 points 7 months ago

Yeah he really screwed up the Australian space agency and put us on the back foot.

Counterpoint: Neptune is neat but there are much more interesting things to study in the solar system than a gas giant. A lander on Titan would drive more science than a new photo of the cloud tops of Neptune.

Why not both? For the cost of one aircraft carrier, we could send probes to every planet.

Woah there cowboy,

We're still closer to rival monkey tribes hurling our shit at one another as it exits our anuses than we are some benevolent civilization with noble pursuits like knowledge.

Don't worry, a few more pointless world wars and population decimations born out of glorified sociopathy, and our species might actually develop admirable priorities beyond tribal resource hoarding from the ashes.

When humans are no longer interested in keeping up with some Kardashian descendant, perhaps we will have stumbled into an age of reason. Seems like as good an indicator as any.

Tbf, even in the Star Trek timeline earth had to go through WWIII nuclear devastation that nearly wiped out all life on earth to even take the first steps on that track

NASA sets program budgets in collaboration with the scientific community.

How do you propose we get society to stop spending money on the military?

[–] Daxtron2@startrek.website 25 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Deep fry the generals in avocado oil

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 22 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Avocado oil? In this economy? Ok, Millennial.

[–] Daxtron2@startrek.website 6 points 7 months ago

if we all save up one avocado toast a week, we can deep fry a general a day!

I’ve been absolutely fascinated with Titan ever since Huygens. It’s low key my best bet for “nearest extraterrestrial life”. I can’t wait for Dragonfly to land a decade from now!

there are many things besides pixel count.

i bet it was a hell of a 0.6mp camera to be able to snap that good of a pic of a planet literally in the middle of space

[–] onlinepersona@programming.dev 17 points 7 months ago

Probably a very good lens. If there's no digital zoom and little digital correction, then quality can be quite good despite low pixel count.

Anti Commercial-AI license

[–] jkrtn@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago

Photography advice threads: "zoom with your feet!"

Scientists: "...ok."

I mean, does Neptune have oil???

We might need a little more to finish destroying our sole, communal habitat. Anything worth doing is worth doing well!

[–] crawancon@lemm.ee 18 points 7 months ago (2 children)

it's got diamond rain, man.

oh... a-and thousand mph wind.

[–] AllonzeeLV@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

it's got diamond rain, man.

Keep that shit down, or the US will have to "bring freedom" to Neptune.

[–] Thorry84@feddit.nl 24 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Diamonds aren't actually worth that much. It has a very troubled history involving exploitation and slavery among other disturbing subjects. The price is kept artificially high by a huge cartel and good marketing saying artificial diamonds aren't as good as the "real" diamonds. In reality artificial diamonds are better in every way, but I guess it's the slavery that adds that je ne sais quoi.

[–] AllonzeeLV@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (2 children)

It's just become steeped in tradition, and sorry to be a stereotypical edgelord and quote Rick Sanchez but scientifically, traditions are an idiot thing.

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

There is something to be said for diamonds as everyday jewelry; being the hardest material out there makes them hella durable.

But, jewelry is 100% a complete scam.

[–] strawberry@kbin.run 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

in what way is jewlwey a scam? it looks nice

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] strawberry@kbin.run 2 points 7 months ago

I mean I personally like how it looks. if people didn't no one would wear it. if its not your thing its not your thing :)

[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

Well, tradition is opposed to the scientific method, which advocates constantly reassessing what you think you know, if that's what you meant.

[–] strawberry@kbin.run 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Literally 'I don't know what', it means a special something that gives a thing a unique charm.

[–] strawberry@kbin.run 3 points 7 months ago

i see, thank you

[–] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 6 points 7 months ago

Bunch of diamonds tossed around in 1000 mph winds, what could be the worst that happens...

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 11 points 7 months ago (2 children)

And on top of that we've only seen a false color version of that image for a long time, leading us to believe that it's a much deeper blue than Uranus.

[–] ag_roberston_author@beehaw.org 8 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Well that makes sense, my anus isn't blue at all.

[–] eletes@sh.itjust.works 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Are there any good voyager 2 documentaries that anyone would recommend? Looking at the pic of Neptune and damn it's crazy that they sent them so far and got great results

[–] Gloomy@mander.xyz 3 points 7 months ago

I quite liked Astrums cover of Voy 1 and 2.

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

At least we have 4k photos of Ur anus.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 6 points 7 months ago

We need to go back!
