Whoopsies! "Free speech absolutist" "accidentally" suspends the accounts of journalists who are critical of him, and people whose political views he disagrees with.

He seems to have quite the habit of firing or banning people he disagrees with, doesn't he?

Via Gizmodo:

"X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, purged an unknown number of prominent accounts over the last 24 hours with little to no explanation, and then restored the accounts minutes after this article was published.

"The list includes popular accounts belonging to journalists, writers, and podcasters. Among them are Ken Klippenstein of the Intercept, writer and podcaster Rob Rousseau, Texas Observer correspondent Steven Monacelli, the account for TrueAnon, a left-wing politics and news podcast, and a number of others.

"One thing the accounts have in common is recent criticisms of the Israeli government.

...

"Musk, who calls himself a “free speech absolutist” has previously said no one should be banned from X unless they break the law.

"Update, 1:12 p.m.: Shortly after this article was published, Musk responded to a question about the issue from far-right influencer Jackson Hinkle. Musk promised to investigate, and the accounts went back up soon after. Musk later blamed the “mistake” on X’s spam algorithms. The Hamas account is still suspended."

@ajsadauskas @technology Isn't this typical of most "free speech" advocates?
Speech is free so long as you agree with them!

[–] lockhart@lemmy.ml 8 points 10 months ago

free speech for me, not for thee

[–] dannym@lemmy.escapebigtech.info 4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

don't lump in everyone with musk, there are many people that actually believe in free speech

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago

You didnt see the quotation marks?
OP is absolutely talking about those supposedly advocates.

[–] 98Percent@mastodon.nz 0 points 10 months ago

@dannym Including me. Depending on how “free speech” is defined. The statement “I think the moon is made of bread dough” is ok. “The moon is made of bread dough” is not ok.

@ajsadauskas Free speech absolutist is so funny. I made him cry and got 'permanently' suspended for about 3 months. https://twitter.com/weezmgk/status/1618352706766385153 @technology

Can we just start calling him what he is, a hate speech absolutionist?

[–] protofoxriley@pawb.social 1 points 10 months ago

I think there are shorter terms we could use but they'd be deemed against ToS

[–] spacecowboy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 10 months ago

This idiot thrives off of any and all media attention. Stop talking about him. It helps him more than hinders.

Not sure what this has to do with technology.

[–] redcalcium@lemmy.institute 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm tired of Musk stuff too, but the community rules does seems to allow it to certain degree:

5: personal rants of Big Tech CEOs like Elon Musk are unwelcome (does not include posts about their companies affecting wide range of people)

The community rules need to change.

A shitty tech owner being a shitty person isn't newsworthy in the first place.

But this community is just as bad as /r/technology about being a Musk news feed.

How the fuck did you used to use Twitter then? Smoke signals?

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 months ago

I just took a shit. Plumbing is a technology so maybe I'll make a post about it here.

Just because something is hosted by technology doesn't mean it's about technology.

And article about Candy Crush's financial statements wouldn't be about technology either.

being generous, this is post about whether the personal vissitudes of a CEO or a recalcitrant spam detector are to blame - the latter is technology the former is relevant if it's being blamed on the latter.

[–] hackerwacker@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

How about option 3: Musk's success relies heavily on remaining visible in the media, so he does and says stupid shit to keep us talking about him and his companies. And we're being absolute morons and doing exactly what he wants.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

Respectfully, that would be covered by "visscitudes."

[–] Seleni@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

No, Musk is an annoying slime ball with a ton of money thanks to mommy and daddy. But thanks to good PR in the past there are a lot of people that worship the ground he walks on, so we need to keep his stupidity visible in the media so that number doesn’t grow.

Or, you could just let him fade into obscurity, which for him is a fate worse than death.

It was an accident and it will accident again until morale improves

I get that you need to use Xitter for leads but at this point there's nothing to gain being there, so get the fuck off there and go to Masto or Threads

[–] hottari@lemmy.ml 7 points 10 months ago

Musk is a fucking idiot.

[–] anachronist@midwest.social 6 points 10 months ago

Elon is a social hemophiliac: His skin is so thin that even the slightest cut makes him bleed.

[–] PowerCrazy@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

But since he owns a technology company, literally anything he says and does it's related to technology!

All posts like this are doing is giving the baby the attention he craves.

Surprising only people who don't have eyes.
