TWRP and OrangeFox allow you to make full backups and do root things without rooting your phone. If you have no need for that kind of functionality then it doesn't make sense to do it. ClockWorkMod I'm pretty sure doesn't exist anymore, or does it?

Never heard of that before. Only familiar with TWRP and OrangeFox myself, but these days every custom ROM has its own very basic recovery anyway if you don't need anything special.

[–] FutileRecipe@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Last I heard, was that Helium was a backup manager app (similar to Titanium Backup) whereas ClockWorkMod Recovery is a recovery...and I think both have been discontinued.

[–] thegreekgeek@midwest.social 1 points 10 months ago

Ope, you're right. I was looking for clockworkmod backup which led me to Carbon which got renamed to Helium. Sorry for the confusion!

Rooting phones nowadays isn't worth it to be honest.

Back in the days, rooting was great as it allows you to install and customise stuff. Nowadays, our phone use is different. Banking and payment apps are used a lot so rooting isn't an option for me.

However, having something like TWRP is good if you want to backup your phone. Great for backup/burner phones.

Universal Safetynet Fix solves a lot of the banking app issues.

[–] Zikeji@programming.dev 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Safety net is on the outs, now the go-to is "Play integrity fix".

[–] Zak@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Thanks. I knew Google changed the name, but I didn't know about the new module. So far the old one is still working for me, but I suppose I should update.

[–] Zikeji@programming.dev 6 points 11 months ago

Once you hit Android 14 you'll have to.

Guess you don't need root on your pc then?

Can't backup apps without root.

Can't control when apps run, eating ram and battery, without root (yes, this is still an issue). I don't use Maps but very occasionally, but it runs at startup and eats a fair amount of ram every day. Many apps set themselves to run on screen on, network connected, etc, for no hood reason. This just (again) eats ram and cpu, wasting battery.

Regarding ram, the default OOM settings are still awful, letting phones get so low on free ram that running OOM to cleanup causes phones to lag, even on phones with 6,8,13gigs. With root, you can bump up the Empty Apps requirement to something like 200mb and never have lags from OOM.

Root enables me to run faster, with lower battery consumption. I have a 2017 phone that currently runs faster than my 2021 phone because it's rooted, and the battery lasts much longer than it used to. They both have similar apps installed (the older one has more stuff, with less ram, 2gigs!)

Apps can't see all of storage without root, so sharing docs between them can be challenging.

Banking apps rarely have problems with root anymore. If they do, just use a bowser (like Hermit) that show web pages like apps. And with the new KernelSU, all these issues go away as root becomes virtually undetectable.

Plenty of reasons for root, but most importantly, having root defines whether the device is mine or Google's.

What do you use to attempt to improve your battery life? Curious.

[–] shalva97@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I have TWRP because of Lineage OS

[–] snowdrop@lemmy.zip 3 points 11 months ago (4 children)

I don't know why you'd need to root in 2023. I'd stick to a secure custom OS instead that can have secure boot. Something like CalyxOS or GrapheneOS. Lineage or /e/ or something if you don't have a pixel.

  • App manager
  • ReVanced
  • DriveDroid
  • MacroDroid or the likes
  • Backup
[–] snowdrop@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 months ago (2 children)

So what part of this requires root again? They all work fine without root.

[–] Engywuck@lemm.ee -2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

AppManager, for instance. But, you know what? Don't root your devices. I'll keep rooting mine just because I can.

[–] snowdrop@lemmy.zip 0 points 11 months ago

I mean hey, anything's better the iOS lol. I don't think rooting is a good idea, but anyone running a custom aosp ROM is an ally of mine. We custom ROM users gotta stick together!

FYI: DriveDroid doesn't work with newer android versions, IsoDrive works better anyway

[–] Engywuck@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Odd... It works for me on A13... I'll try IsoDrive anyway. Thanks!

[–] AceSLS@ani.social 1 points 11 months ago

Strange, doesn't work for me on A14, Evolution X rom

[–] Diabolo96@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Actual full backups, for one.

[–] gohixo9650@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

does it work for encrypted phones?

[–] Diabolo96@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Sorry, I don't know the answer. I think it's highly unlikely since encryption makes the data unreadable but I imagine it be possible to decrypt the data from inside the phone, backup it and then re-encrypt it after restoration. Still not that sure tho so you can search the net and see if it's doable .

[–] gohixo9650@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 11 months ago

the trade between an encrypted storage and the ability of a full backup is a very bad deal. Unless you're talking for a phone that you leave at home at all times

[–] RazorsLedge@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

For calyx and lineage: I don't think you can call the livedisplay settings CLI without root. For example I have a 1-click widget to turn my phones RGB values to all red. Or is there a way? (Needs to be RGB, not some crappy red overlay)

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee -3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

You're right, you don't know why.

Do you not need root on your pc then? I don't on my work pc, because it's their device. I do on my own pc's, because they're my devices.

These are computers, root is part of managing things. This push away from root is Google trying to control our devices.

Root defines whether it's my device or it's controlled by Google. I guess you want devices controlled by Google.

[–] snowdrop@lemmy.zip 5 points 11 months ago

I have a degoogled phone without root lol, I'm running GrapheneOS. All you're doing is opening yourself to his security vulnerabilities with root. Desktops are entirely different then phones. Everything you mentioned does not require root.

[–] Dr_DOOM_@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I see a few people arguing about why anyone would root in 2023. I root because no custom rom is the best but Xposed covers what I need. I also root for many other reasons but the biggest reason is ads. I use AdAway to get rid of ads.
