Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

"Police restore law and order with the arrest of 97-year-old Alan Stuart."

It takes real talent to clearly be satirising the cops whilst still using polite, printable language. That is an incredible sentence.

Also, this is proof that "I won't be alive to see the worst of it," isn't the reason fossil fuel execs and billionaires are ignoring climate change. They're disconnected from the human race by their money and power. Otherwise they might realise that, "I don't have much longer to be on the right side of history," is an even better reason to act, like this guy did.

Archive org link incase anyone else gets stuck in a captcha loop

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 19 points 11 months ago (3 children)

The archive.today captcha loop is their passive-aggressive way of complaining that your DNS provider isn't using eDNS to send them approximate location information. It's mostly being hit by firefox users because firefox uses a dns-over-https system which obscures location information by default. You can add exceptions to the DNS and HTTPS settings to get around it.

Shit that annoys me

Ah! I had seen something regarding DNS issues when I did a cursory search. I'm using private relay with safari (lurking via IOS app) so I imagine it's similar. Thanks for the info!

Or… don’t use an archive service that has a tantrum if it doesn’t have your approximate location… which you should Not be giving away to anyone, really.

They do way better at serving content without pop-overs than anybody else though

Can we start archiving stuff somewhere that doesn't block firefox?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 11 months ago

We can, but the other sites tend to fail in other ways, such as not capturing images, or not removing pop-overs

the same sort of violence from the state to a man that fights for their childrens future and one who guns down two people because he doesn't care about anyone else.
