General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

Has there ever been a petion on that site that didn't just get a boiler plate "We discussed it and No" equivalent response?

If signing petitions achieved anything, they wouldn't let us do it.

Personally, it's less about actually expecting an election to be called as a result of the petition and more about publicly announcing our discontent at the current government. The media must address it eventually, and the opposition will use it against them.

Have you not seen the opinion polls lately? The government are around 20 points behind and have been for some time.

It's already fairly obvious that people are unhappy with the government.

[–] noodle@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Opinion polls can be handwaved a lot easier than the government needing to discuss it in Parliament.

But wait a moment - Are you worried about the opposition having another stick to hit the government with? If you don't support having another general election then don't sign the petition.

If you don't support having another general election then don't sign the petition.

What? When did I say that I don't support having a general election? 🤔

I'm just not going to sign a useless petition that's the equivalent of virtue-signalling and will achieve nothing.

The people who sign this will obviously not be supporters of the government and a general election called now would likely see them out of power, so why would they listen to it?

Read my first comment.

There are independent candidates who are getting more votes for them in local elections than the Tory candidate. They knew people don't like them, they don't care.

[–] noodle@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Then don't sign the petition. No need to stress.

The problem with political activism these days is that people think that making a submission form on a government website is the same as actually doing something.

And I'd prefer it if they just did the thing.

In this case no action is actually required, just don't vote for them whenever the general election comes around, but generally speaking I wish people would stop using this pointless website. It was created to make people think they're taking action in a society they have no agency in.

So no there absolutely is "stress" and it's that morons keep thinking that they're doing something when they're doing f all.

No one expects a result from this. What is all about is, stopping the BS that Sunak spouts, when he states that no one wants an election. Get a million signatures on that petition, and he becomes a fish in a barrel.

[–] Jackthelad@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Do you take everything people say literally?

[–] Syldon@feddit.uk 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Do you really think the damage these scumbags have done to this country is something to be light hearted about? Go to your local foodbank (yes, everyone has one now), see how your jokes go down there.

[–] Jackthelad@lemmy.world -5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh, get over yourself. There's food banks all over Europe, is that the fault of this government as well?

They're very unlikely to still be in power after the next election, so I don't know what you're worried about.

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Every time a genelec comes around it's always "there's no way they'll still win" but they have. Time and time again.

[–] Jackthelad@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Who has been saying that though?

I'm guessing people who don't pay attention, because only 2015 was really in doubt and that was only because the opinion polls failed. 2010, 2017 and 2019 have never looked like anything other than a Conservative win.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

They will simply ignore it, as usual. The point that says "Parliament will consider this for a debate" is just a handful of MPs in a small room, and regardless what Labour MPs will do there, the Tories will simply vote it discussed and dismissed.

[–] Asymptote@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He knows. They all know. None of them care.

[–] li10@feddit.uk 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, we would’ve got one after the Liz Truss situation if they had any intention of calling an early GE.

[–] apis@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

Pfft no, there's a lot more wrecking to do, to make it all the harder for Labour to fix.
