Maybe they should have told ICE the missing people were immigrants and they were just hiding in the flood waters. They'd have been there in no time.

The key thing to call out is those L.A. protesters were peaceful and orderly. They remained calm even while being attacked by Trump’s goons. There were no fights and no murders. They protested civilly, and employed civil disobedience and organisation.

They are not completely non-violent though, as a handful did damage property by setting fire to Waymo’s (equipped with police surveillance). But that does not apply to all the protesters as, if I recall correctly, they had a massive turnout. Only a handful destroyed property.

Just want to clarify, Waymo was using their camera tech to give the police protestor information yo arrest people. They didnt just get a little too rowdy and set a car on fire, it was an act of self preservation to further their protest. Its important to put that in context, and not just throw that out there like people were just being hooligans.

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 1 points 21 hours ago

Waymo got what they deserved. I hope they and others now know to not mess with the people.

[–] CatZoomies@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Appreciate you adding that clarification. It was a while ago so I totally forgot about Waymo doing that!

It’s been… a really long year. Another 3.5 more to go.

Another 3.5 more to go.

An optimist, I see. I truly hope that ends up being the worst case scenario.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Remember, midterms in 1.5. They could let us stop most of this.

Property destruction is not violence.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Property destruction of an individual owner's (e.g house they depend on) is violence, if it poses damage to the family that lives there.
Destruction of corporate property is not.
The funny part is the cops only ever respond to one of these types of damage. Take a guess which.

Depends on the individual.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 22 points 3 days ago

We need to stop referring to people as "violent" for damaging the means of oppression. Also people might technically be violent if they defend themselves against violent attacks by the authorities, but that again should not be accepted as a framing.

It is so obviously as of late that they hate us and think we are stupid.

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (5 children)

But are they wrong about people being stupid? The majority of voters did choose this.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 16 points 3 days ago

What lack of class consciousness does to a mother fucker.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 16 points 3 days ago (2 children)

elections are less of a way to voice our opinion and more of a pop quiz for the elite to see what they can get away with

Yes it's by far not optimal, and more of a damage control, but people deliberately chose (more) damage. Also if progressive politics were more popular, the dems would be more forced to submit to the voters will...

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

except that the donvict said he was gonna do all this before he did all this. and they still voted for him.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

yeah they failed the pop quiz

[–] Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

The majority of voters did not vote for this.

It's more like 1/3rd, or a minority.

After seeing what Trump has done and will do, I don't think the majority like what's happening. Sucks that they didn't vote though, which might not be their fault since voter suppression is a thing

[–] Captainvaqina@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I would like to see firm proof that the majority did choose this.

[–] Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

The majority didn't. I crunched the numbers under this post.

R's garnered some ~32% of the eligible vote, while D's got ~31% and I's ~1%. The other ~36% of eligible voters didn't vote.

So it's more like 1/3rd of the US electorate voted for this, far from the majority. You're correct.

A better way to put it is that a large enough fraction of voters chose this to make their seizure of power somewhat plausible. Even by the official numbers, trump didn't get 50% of the vote and nowhere near 50% of eligible voters. And that's with all the acknowledged and undebatable fuckery like gerrymandering and voter suppression that went on, even if they didn't actually rig the election in any way - something that of course they would never do because they have a principled faith in democracy.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

He only won a plurality. The majority of voters chose someone else.

[–] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 3 days ago

They weren't sent to LA to say protesters. They were sent to intimidate and test if they can similarly deploy them to other states.

They don't really have much to do here anyway.

Oh and to summarize. Together with NG that's nearly 5,000 troops. The protest (which was already under control by the time troops arrived) had 1,000 people and was contained within 5 blocks of the city.

The protest was just excuse.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 3 days ago

There's a reason it's not the Trump Administration but the Trump Regime. He's using federal resources not to execute the law and perpetuate national services, but to serve his own interests. Trump is not enacting the duties of the office, but instead is looking to profit personally from his powers.

The White House has literally gone rogue, and is not at all engaging the responsibilities of government.

Think of him and his staff as organized embezzlers.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 38 points 3 days ago

Because they want to protect government and power .... not people ... people don't matter ... money and power does

“So you’re saying this is the fault of Obama and I should keep voting Republican?”

Gonna love this:

Members of the U.S. Marines Corps are coming to Louisiana to aid U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with administrative and logistical work as ICE continues its immigration crackdown across the country, according to the Department of Defense's U.S. Northern Command.

Uh oh, I hope ICE doesn't use crayons for their administrative stuff.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 3 days ago

the LA protest, sending troops there was a perfomative/strongman for thier base.

[–] Waffle@infosec.pub 1 points 2 days ago

Because they were hoping that every single one was dead, probably...

[–] InternetRando@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

What do we do with this information?

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Do what I do, print it out and post it on the corkboard by the mailboxes. Lemmy and Imgur are great resources for leftist propaganda to spread around your neighborhood.

Marines and soldiers, don’t let them use a partially incorrect fact to attack you.
