Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.
  • Β

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

I would argue that's the cool part. You also have the average hyper racist neo-reactionary Suckless fossid user who thinks daring to write in anything other than C is "gay" or smth.

    [–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (5 children)

As a gay trans man, looking down on people who code in anything other than C is my toxic masculinity. Don’t let reactionaries take it away from me.

You’re not a real man if you use an IDE. Vim and gcc were good enough for the founding fathers (D & R), they’re good enough for me.

I use an IDE... guess I'm not a real man anymore πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

I had a discussion with someone who was of the belief that anyone that doesn't build their own packages and reads the documentation is a lazy retard that doesn't know what they're installing on their computer.

    That was a fun conversation

Software from the 80's? Get that new fangled garbage outta here. If it doesn't predate the first Alien movie it's probably full of bugs.

    [–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Is there actually pre-1979 software I am using that I probably didn't know about?

    [–] morbidcactus@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

As far as I'm aware, a lot of the core utilities originate back some time ago, stuff like ls, CD, chmod/chown, cat, sed, awk etc.

Now the question is, is a piece of software that's been maintained or ported since the 70s considered pre 79 software?

    [–] austinfloyd@ttrpg.network 7 points 1 day ago

Off the top of my head, vi came out in the late 70s (though it might have been a little while later before you could start editing directly through vi)

You're Indian tech software from the 80's setting the kernel mailing list on fire?

    [–] Lycist@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your name matches the comment directly above.

    [–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is mostly true, especially in communities like this. I do know a couple of guys who are the complete opposite politically - ultra conservative Christians. But when they need forum support and encounter this part of the community it just makes them stronger in their opinion that the world needs Jesus.

It's either "how it looks" or "what it looks like". You can't mix and match.

You don't need the "like" on the end

    Missed opportunity

The gun should have been labeled !!

    [–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 day ago

It is, with the best meme security problem that came to my mind.

    ../

    [–] papertowels@mander.xyz 11 points 1 day ago

    'sudo' is another contender

    [–] nagaram@startrek.website 9 points 1 day ago

It needs way more gawdy neon color palettes.

I swear half these people with blogs pick the most aggressive bright pink and greens when building their websites from scratch for the first time and then just stick with it!

    [–] Sabata11792@ani.social 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How could you forget the weebs?

    [–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 1 day ago

Also didn't include the 'old guard', the meme was just too small, or doesn't have enough recognizable details respectively (and putting them in heaven had bad implications).

    [–] fleebleneeble@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago

Absolutely beautiful. Happy to be a part of this community and still learning every day.

    [–] Jedi@bolha.forum 22 points 2 days ago

I love the fact that "Ninja Cat" was used as a mascot for Windows 10 Insiders back in the day. Makes the meme even better to me.

    [–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

wouldnt it be hardware from the 80s?
