On Tuesday, the official account for the visa branch of the US Embassy in Tokyo posted an important note for those applying for a nonimmigrant visa — or DS-160 — for the States. According to the notice, applications must include accurate information regarding their SNS accounts that they have used within the last five years. Anyone who fails to comply with this request won’t be allowed to enter the country.

While the US Department of State (DOS) and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have been checking the social media accounts of visa applicants and immigrants since at least 2019, Susanne Heubel, senior counsel at New York-based immigration law firm Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, told US Today that up until his last January these searches have been “almost negligible.”

If you said anything against Trump or Israel, do not even bother applying.

This is draconian and their way of censoring other countries. It's utter horse shit.

The EU and Japan should apply the same stupid shit to prevent the neo-Nazi Russian supporting MAGA fucks from entering.

What if you don’t use social media? Or at least only use pseudo anonymous social media like reddit or Lemmy?

What if you delete all your accounts right before applying, will they go through the deleted accounts?

[–] goldenquetzal@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Article says they expect deleted to be reported so I'm guessing their AI is scraping and comparing.

Like, do they want to hear “I’m xx_COCKBLASTER_xx on the WarThunder forum.”

Then say you don't use any, however I have a feeling you'd be denied for lying even if it's the truth

At this point we all need fake social media accounts

Do I get to crouch around in my underwear on Kristi Noem’s latest TV commercials?

If that's your goal in life, I'm sure the US has a fast-track for that.

I still collect money from selling out my travel companions? Right..?

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's one free lunch per sold out companion. Gotta invest!

Does Gopher and IRC count as social media?
