I've recently discovered element and revolt as alternatives for discord and Snapchat. We mainly use Snapchat for text chat so not being able to send snaps is not a deal-breaker. It's quite difficult to get people to switch over to something else because they know their current service and "it just works". Snapchat for android is terrible and some of my friends agree so I wouldn't say that "It just works". I need some tips as to how to convince them to switch. Thanks in advance :-)

It's easier to just get new friends.

Just delete your account on the old service. I deleted Whatsapp and most of my close friends were unwilling to install „another app“ at first.

I was fine with their point of view and we started texting via SMS. After a while they realized that switching is more comfortable than writing via SMS and they were fine.

Only works for close friends though. Others may simply cut ties then

Down vote me if you must, but I'd say "don't be that guy."

It took me a long time to learn this lesson; sometimes it's okay let things go. If it isn't costing you a lot of money, just use the one your freinds are okay with.

I’m not trying to be «that guy» at least I hope I’m not. I tried to see if they are willing to, but it seems like they aren’t that interested in switching. I guess I’ll just have to live with that.

Good for you.

Have a Happy Easter!

I'm unfamiliar with element and revolt. Someone suggested Session to me and it looks interesting. Jami sounds good in principle but it's been too flaky to use for me so far. Jitsi Meet is maybe ok and I guess I'll try it next.

Revolt is quite early in development so I wouldn’t recommend fully switching just yet, it’s open source so you can help contribute to them on their GitHub page. I try to stay away to stuff I don’t fully know can be trusted. I haven’t heard of session but I think it doesn’t quite matter where I get them to switch, but if I can get them to switch at all.

Just a word of warning re Session, it's tied up with a blockchain token so if you're not interested in cryptocurrency you might want to steer clear.

Guess I wasted 2 hours translating their services to Norwegian for nothing. Thanks for this info. I’ll get to deleting my account.

Fair warning that Element is not anywhere close to being as polished as Discord, but it doesn't hurt to just suggest to try it out and see what the reception is like. As others have said you probably don't push the matter too hard but it doesn't hurt to ask and lay out your reasons.

Revolt looked rather promising even though I had never heard of it. I wanted try it and downloaded their app. I was very surprised to learn they require Google Play (services) to function and that alone is big red flag to me.. As well as Microsoft Store? There's a GitHub page linked to it, but the fact that they recommend MS Store creeps me out

There is a version on F Droid that doesn't need GPS. If you're talking about desktop, on linux it doesn't require anything else.
