Summary

Over 80 people were killed and 20 injured in Colombia's Catatumbo region after peace talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN) collapsed.

The ELN clashed with ex-FARC rebels over control of the coca-producing border area with Venezuela, resulting in kidnappings and mass displacement of thousands.

Colombia's government deployed humanitarian aid and troops to the region, demanding the ELN cease attacks.

Peace efforts with the ELN have failed repeatedly, with violence escalating as the group seeks recognition as a political organization.

This government has failed repeatedly to maintain the most basic safety and order. Really a shame to see a country that was on the right track now falling apart.
