Merry Christmas employees that helped us make billions.

Damn, literally just wanted to work there

Your sites are too low - you should aim to work AND be laid off from there.

as someone that does work there (not laid off thankfully), I gotta ask, why?

[–] arrakark@10291998.xyz 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I worked for a competitor, (not laid off, just quit to take a break). AMD seems to pay a bit better and the office is closer to home. They have been stealing coworkers over the years. I get the impression that the company culture is a bit more about taking risks. My old employer was very conservative, and even though I was working in the least conservative team, I still felt like the culture was too slow.

Why? Is it a bad place to work? Spill the beans lol

very strange to see someone say thay AMD pays better. we have a lot of attrition on our team because most competitors pay better. As for culture, it's ok. I'm senior enough that I can do whatever I want now. We do use a lot of in house tools that suck ass, but we seem to be moving towards standardisation. I'm hopeful that this trend continues. Idk if I would recommend AMD, but I have no idea what kind of work you do and what team might hire you. Wish you the best either way

If you want to work in AI, they're hiring. The layoff was sold as a way to make room for more AI headcount.

[–] jayk@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

as someone who works at AMD and on AI, this is only kinda true. While we're not as affected by layoffs, AMD has been extremely stingy with budget this year. Maybe that will change in the coming months though

As someone who works at AMD not in AI, that's how they explained it to us. Or I guess it was a bit more generic "highest growth areas" and "still hiring for positions aligned with our strategic priorities." Which we generally took to mean AI based on the gestures broadly at the market.

hmmmm, seems like everyone's getting fucked regardless then. I'm working on next gen MI stuff and it's pretty hard to even get a req right now. Management hasn't mentioned the whole "strategic priorities" thing to us, probably because if we're not a priority, then who is? AMD didn't really do a lot of firing before now, at least not that I'm aware of, so maybe this is how they're explaining it

[–] candybrie@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah. I'm surprised they took from MI. Management was just complaining last week about how hard it is to hire RTL people and trying to juggle us around to all the generations and variants that need to be staffed. And then this week it's this. Maybe it is how they fire people; I haven't heard of anyone else being fired besides this layoff in the ~4 years I've been there.

That's not very nice of them

[–] LavenderDay3544@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

And Intel laid off 25K people to cut costs. What else is new?
