Price memory probably. It was expensive because of desirable cards and Dragons being very popular but those cards got reprinted later bringing the actual price of the cards down. The deck never got reprinted so it stayed at the inflated price.

Thanks, that could explain it. But if that's really the cause, it's a serious bummer. The premise of these starter decks sounds really good, but if they aren't produced anymore and some of them get so pricy, they don't help that well...
A bit late to the party, but as the other comment said, its clearly because is a popular archtype and it hasn't been reprinted. WotC is known for that kind of stuff, perhaps your firend could choose a different one thats mor on the range you all are okay with.
There is an Izzet Dragons precon that I really like, because it has a goad subtheme and makes for fun table dynamics.
As a final note, where I live you can't find precons for less than 80€ due to taxes
