What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

I mean a free open-source project's gotta get money someway or another. At least they're nice enough to give you the option to turn it off.

And it’s so simple a child could figure it out.

Have they tried not making individuals rich?

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The freeloaders will bitch about ads while never donating a dime.

Mozilla is making millions of dollars each year.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yep, no one is disputing that, the issue is where those millions comes from....

Google.

If Firefox is to survive they need independant income strearms outside of Google.

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

I wouldn't be so worried about that. Google actually needs to fund Mozilla, so no one can claim that they have a monopoly on browser rendering engines. Mozilla will always get some funding, and they will always ensure that it has some user base, no matter how small, just so they can escape antitrust regulation.

You are eligible for a full refund if you aren’t satisfied with the $0 you paid for Firefox.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

by that logic every foss project is justified in enshittifying

Enshittification describes a specific process that is ultimately about maximizing profit for shareholders at the expense of everyone else’s experience. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

Mozilla doesn’t have shareholders, neither do most open source projects.

When people give away software for free and yet attempt to make a living from it through other means like ads, that’s a different sorta thing.

Some will still manage to complain that the software they received for free has some ads. Others will ask how they help or donate so that the software can be ad-free.

You do you.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago

so making firefox shittier doesnt count because technically they dont have shareholders? nah man.

You think it's anti-libre software? Use Fennec from F-Droid, a Firefox fork.

[–] noodlejetski@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

and pray, how do you install it on iOS?

[–] autonomoususer@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Try fork iOS, oh wait...

If you're on Android, just go to about:config and disable browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.showSponsored and browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.showSponsoredTopSites. Or use a Mull, a hardened version for Firefox for Android, which disables this by default.
