Sheriff's deputies said the suspect was later killed in "a lethal force encounter" with authorities. Tributes continue to pour in honoring the victim, Lauri Carleton.

Gotta practice that passive language to avoid laying blame anywhere. Wouldn't want to step in it themselves, right?

"It" to have been involved "in an encounter which ended up involving stepping".
