While he’s not wrong about any of this, the fact that flying has become so miserable may be a good thing. We’ll need to sharply reduce the amount of flying to stay within the necessary carbon budget to keep the world economy and quality of life on track. I know for me the misery involved has had an impact on how often I would fly otherwise.
The problem is not flying itself, it’s the lack of stimulus to make flying green. If governments would actually tax jet fuel, we probably would have figured out hydrogen based airplanes by now. We should stop blaming consumers for wanting to live a good and fulfilling live and start pressuring companies to do what is right. We have the tech, we just don’t have the right “incentive” for these companies.
I mean those are also good things but I think it’s going to take some time—decarbonization or air travel is a difficult problem. In the mean time air travel should be avoided to the extent practical.
