Another locomotive from Portland & Western's collection of first generation diesels, this SD9 still shows its unmistakable Southern Pacific heritage. Built in April 1955, this loco was celebrating its 51st birthday when this photo was shot in April 2006 at the St. Helens yard.

The Oklahoma Railway Museum has taken delivery of a historied alternative fuel testbed locomotive, most recently operated by BNSF as a hydrogen fuel cell switcher in Southern California.

A freight train derailed in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on Thursday. The Swiss Federal Railways said the tunnel would remain closed until August 16 at the earliest.

Until then, train passengers between German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino will be diverted via the Gotthard panorama route, which takes about an hour longer.

Cancellations are also possible, the federal railways said. This could disrupt the traffic of people returning form their holidays and going to the Zurich Street Parade, which is taking place over the weekend.

The train derailed at a multifunction point in Faido, in canton Ticino. This multifunction station is one of two emergency stops of the tunnel.

Cantonal police announced that several wagons had derailed, some of which contained dangerous goods. However, these did not pose any danger and nobody was injured.

The federal railways said the causes of the derailment and the extent of the damage were still unknown. "The damage is considerable," spokeswoman Roberta Trevisan told Swiss public broadcaster, RSI.

As far as passenger transport was concerned, she recommended travellers find out more before driving through the separate Gotthard Road Tunnel.

Experts will now examine the damage and check for possible damage to the roadway. The Swiss Safety Investigation Centre is also looking into the matter.

Better spend those Biden Bucks soon! This project will build seven new stations. Hope its completed before funding is potentially pulled by the next administration.

I don't quite understand how it works. Union Station will connect to Oglevie? How does that help?

They're already not very far from one another. If I needed to get to Oglevie from Union station, I can walk on the street... but now there will be a tunnel linking the two? Wouldn't the tunnel be the same distance? Also, how does that get me to St Louis in 2 hours?

I feel like I'm missing something important.

At the time of this photo, Union Pacific 3985, a Challenger class 4-6-6-4, was the largest operating steam locomotive in existence. This locomotive was donated by Union Pacific to a museum and has been replaced in excursion service by an even larger 4-8-8-4 Big Boy locomotive.

There is a lack of European trains here. This is an empty tank train going south. It's operated by Widmer Rail Service, a private railway operator.

In early May 2023 I embarked on a train journey throughout the eastern US to see what it was like. I really enjoyed my trip and recorded a travel log series for people to check out!
