Alt text: A photo of Mike Pence in a leather biker vest with a bunch of bland patches on it, like two different Indiana patches and an American flag patch. He's got both hands outward and his fingers are pointing, reminiscent of that old Steve Martin sketch where him and Dan Aykroyd are The Festrunk Brothers, "just two wild and crazy guys."

I'm looking for bulk tofu (* not in a bunch of individual packages *), and thanks to some helpful redditors it seems like my best bet is to try an east Asian/international grocery store.

  1. It seems like there is a big cluster of stores like that in the Castleton area, does it make sense for me to crawl around there?
  2. Can anyone recommend a specific store that has bulk tofu at a good price?
  3. I'm guessing that Saraga's online product listing is only a subset of what's in the store. Am I right? Yes, I could just venture out of my cave and search for myself, but my cave is very nice. I'd like to minimize time spent in the surface world.

(thank you stable diffusion for the image)

The goal of our study is to establish an elemental database that includes statistical correlations for trends and sources of elemental contaminants found in house dust within Indiana homes. Through the measurement of the elemental content of house dust, we aim to identify specific elements of concern, such as lead and fluorine (which serves as an indicator for PFAS).

Can y'all point me to any businesses around Indianapolis who can mend my gloves and backpack? I'm looking for work that is durable and affordable, doesn't have to be precise or attractive.

All my stuff is some kind of fabric, not leather.

I'm guessing this would be a tailoring and alterations place, but I'm not sure: maybe sporting goods or leather places would do it? I don't know.

It's #ShowYourStripes day and so here is the temperature change in #Indiana from 1895-2022. Very few blue stripes since 2000.

This is pretty much a clone of my reddit post from earlier this year:

I'm looking for other organizations around Indianapolis similar to Habitat for Humanity, just trying to expand my options for when their stuff is already booked or doesn't fit my schedule or skills*. Can anyone suggest anything? Bonus points if there is a leftist vibe.

My list so far is

  • Habitat;
  • SAWS;
  • Keep Indianapolis Beautiful;
  • Hoosier Hiking Council;
  • NeighborLink (seems a bit more demanding)

*My skills are...no skills. I've found that Habitat is often still able to find something for me to do. So I want to avoid any truly hardcore opportunities where they expect you to know what you are doing coming in.

Wait wait wait, hear me out!

I know this sounds like a joke, but I mean it. Are there any political organizations that will spam me with Indiana-specific calls to action? (Other than Joe Hogsett, lol)

My model for this is ResistBot, which is mostly about the federal level and pretty decentralized.

I'm mostly thinking of low-effort things like "call your representative" or "sign this petition," but bigger stuff would be cool too.

I'm not convinced that these things have much impact, but a) that's exactly why I want to find a way to do them without investing a lot of time, and b) I think it would be a good way to learn about Indiana issues that don't affect my friend circle directly.

Just to reiterate, I'm mostly not looking for officeholders or office-seekers. Nothing against them.

A federal judge issued an order Friday stopping an Indiana ban on puberty blockers and hormones for transgender minors from taking effect as scheduled July 1.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana sought the temporary injunction in its legal challenge of the Republican-backed law, which was enacted this spring amid a national push by GOP-led legislatures to curb LGBTQ+ rights.

The order from U.S. District Judge James Patrick Hanlon will allow the law’s prohibition on gender-affirming surgeries to take effect.

Hanlon’s order also blocks provisions that would prohibit Indiana doctors from communicating with out-of-state doctors about gender-affirming care for their patients younger than 18.

The ACLU filed the lawsuit within hours after Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb signed the bill April 5. The challenge, on behalf of four youths undergoing transgender treatments and an Indiana doctor who provides such care, argued the ban would violate the U.S. Constitution’s equal protection guarantees and trampled upon the rights of parents to decide medical treatment for their children.

Indiana’s Republican-dominated legislature approved the ban after contentious hearings that primarily featured testimony from vocal opponents, with many arguing the gender-affirming care lessened the risk of depression and suicide among transgender youth.

This recipe originated from the Tea Room inside the old L. S. Ayres Department Store here in Indianapolis. This particular batch came from a local soup place just off Monument Circle.

Whoever does the audio engineering for this is amazing. This was the second year in a row being the best sounding concert I went to. I can't believe it was free.
