#Firefox 135.0.1 is out to fix broken search functionality when updating to Firefox 135 from a previous release with a custom search engine that has an overly-large icon installed, scrolling to the wrong location with anchor tags in some situations, drop-down menus being unusable on some sites relying on certain mousemove event behavior, and restoring of closed windows and tabs via the History menu when upgrading from an older Firefox version https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/135.0.1/releasenotes/

In mid-March 2024, KrebsOnSecurity revealed that the founder of the personal data removal service Onerep also founded dozens of people-search companies. Shortly after that investigation was published, Mozilla said it would stop bundling Onerep with the Firefox browser and wind down its partnership with the company. But nearly a year later, Mozilla is still promoting it to Firefox users.

Happy I Love Free Software Day! 💕

Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.

Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.

This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.

Without further ado, THANK YOU to:

  • @yunohost@toot.aquilenet.fr, for powering Nebuchadnezzar
  • @fedora@fosstodon.org, for running my beloved #Framework laptop
  • @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org, for designing and building repairable, #Linux-friendly and truly open hardware
  • @gnome@floss.social and @GTK@floss.social, for being just gorgeous
  • @calyxos@fosstodon.org (thus @LineageOS@fosstodon.org), for powering my #Fairphone5
  • #Obtainium, for making me directly download apps on my phone, and @fdroidorg@floss.social for distributing them
  • #AuroraStore, for proxying the download of apps I am doomed to get from Google Play
  • @element@mastodon.matrix.org, for developing #Synapse, even though the new proprietary Synapse Pro is VERY PROBLEMATIC AND DISAPPOINTING
  • #Fractal, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Matrix client ever
  • @signalapp@mastodon.world, for keeping me connected with the people I love
  • @Mastodon@mastodon.social, for also maintaining a feature-packed experimental fork (#GlitchSoc), that is what Pan runs
  • #Tuba and #Moshidon, for being the most beautiful and awesome #Mastodon clients ever
  • #Firefox, for still remaining the best possible #browser choice, despite #Mozilla’s governance messiness
  • @openstreetmap@en.osm.town, for allowing us to find the right path, both literally and metaphorically!
  • @organicmaps@fosstodon.org, for being the simplest, cleanest, yet feature-rich #OSM client and navigation app
  • @protonvpn@mastodon.social, for making me browse safely from/to anywhere in the planet and @protonprivacy@mastodon.social #ProtonMail, for hosting my email, despite the latest alarming political statements…
  • @libreoffice@fosstodon.org, for allowing me to draft documents with ease, the last of which was my #CV
  • #LanguageTool, for preventing me from making embarassing spelling mistakes
  • @photoprism@floss.social, for safely storing and indexing all my photographic memories, on Aby, and for providing stellar and friendly support too!
  • #Actual, for moderating the very likely risk of ending up completely broke, since it forces me to manage my finances consciously and coherently
  • @readeck@mastodon.online, for storing and sorting ALL my varied and overwhelming inputs
  • @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz, for storing and synchronizing my data, for its #calendar, its #tasks, and all its awesome apps
  • #Rustdesk, for preventing my friends and family members from going crazy, by allowing me to remotely connect to their devices and directly address the issues they have
  • #Listmonk, for sending out my newsletter
  • @eleventy@fosstodon.org, for powering all the websites I maintain, above all the virtual representation of my mind, and for being the only reason why I resist and try to continue learning #JavaScript
  • @forgejo@floss.social, for giving us a chance to truly control and collectively develop the sources of our software, but most importantly @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de, for RESISTING, RESISTING, RESISTING, despite the hatred and attacks nazi assholes throw at them
  • @musicbrainz@mastodon.social for keeping music knowledge open and free, and @ListenBrainz@mastodon.social for scrobbling the crazy music I listen to
  • The @fsfe@mastodon.social, for promoting this celebration and fighting the good fight!

Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.

I am super sorry if I forgot someone!

For whatever reason now when I have Ublock enabled every page on YouTube loads twice, and playlists are completely unusable as they reload indefinitely. If I disable Ublock this stops. Every other site seems to be just fine.

Thanks to @mike@flipboard.social, I just had an epiphany about why centralization of the the world wide web happened:

Web browsers like #Chrome and #Firefox are stuck in an old paradigm of webpages -- which is an ancient way of viewing the web.

But that's not how the actual web works anymore. The real web is no longer about pages but about feeds, and the folks building web browsers -- Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla -- still don't realize this.

Even worse, feed functionality that used to exist natively in web browsers no longer exists. For example, it used to be that when you visited a webpage, web browsers would detect an #RSS feed -- giving you the option to subscribe. But starting with #Chrome, this feature was removed from modern web browsers.

However, that doesn't mean feeds have disappeared from the web. No, many have coalesced into walled gardens like #Twitter and #Instagram. And they're downright hostile towards access if you do not have an account on their services.

But that doesn't mean feeds have disappeared. Quite the opposite: they're more prevalent than ever with forums, podcasts, video, and more. They're still here, just harder to see simply because web browsers are stuck on that webpage paradigm.

So @surf@flipboard.social is essentially a web browser, not with a webpage paradigm, but a webfeed paradigm where -- instead of inputting URLs into an address bar -- it grabs feeds across from RSS, #podcast, and #socialweb feeds.

And frankly, this approach is brilliant. I use #Surf every day, and it's literally the first thing I check when I wake up in the morning.

With Surf, we've moved away from mere Fediverse clients. Now we have a genuine web browser for feeds!

#Firefox 134.0.2 is out now to fix a regression in Firefox 134 where anchored links in HTML framesets pointing to local files didn't work, an issue in developer tools preventing the resending of network requests when debugging extensions, an issue where data consumption from service workers may unexpectedly halt, and the crash reporter not being displayed for some localized builds https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/134.0.2/releasenotes/

Does anyone know if there is a way to make the Web browser (Firefox-based in my case) ignore audio volume control commands coming from a site? Youtube has its automatic levels thing that it's forcing on me and I can't even disable it. (It's disabled and grayed out, but still happening.) Every time I open a new video it has changed the application volume to what they've arbitrarily decided is correct (but meanwhile the player in the page is still set to 100%.) I have a volume control I can reach with ease, so I don't need their "help."

I know there is an extension or a script to disable Youtube doing this, but it is my understanding that we have to use as few extensions as possible to reduce fingerprinting...

Crossposted from a community manager's post: https://reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1hwd6u7/join/_mozilla/_to/_test/_the/_new/_firefox/_address/_bar/

Hi r/firefox 👋,

The address bar is one of the most prominent areas in any browser, and Firefox is no exception. Understanding its importance, the Firefox team has been working on a set of complementary features designed to improve discoverability and security of the Firefox address bar.

With this set of features landing in Firefox Beta 135, we need your expertise to help us test these enhancements by participating in this campaign, which will be live on January 9th!

The top 5 contributors will each receive a $50 voucher to shop at Mozilla’s swag stores as a thank-you for your efforts.

Have any questions about this campaign? Join us on Matrix or comment down below!

Whether Matt Mullenweg likes it or not, #Wpengine does not owe #Wordpress *any percentage of money. Being that Wordpress is opensource.

Apparently there was a time himself where Mullenweg himself even acknowledged that this was true. What has come of the #CEO of Wordpress in these modern times.

Apparently, he wants Wpengine to contribute to Wordpress, but if Wordpress is opensource, they don't *have to contribute, but they can. That's the point of opensource. If you want paid that badly it shouldn't be an opensource project. Or find another way to get paid. Like he could try #ads or something it doesn't have to be like this.

Imagine if #Mozilla #Firefox asked every single browser #fork to pay them, and to contribute, and that they had to do so. Or every #google #Chromium fork.

What he is asking for is anti opensource. If he wants capitalism, he should be maintaining software with that type of licensing.
